World No Tobacco Day, which is celebrated on May 31, is another opportunity to recall the health risks of smoking. According to statistics, premature death is waiting for half of smokers - it is seven million people. Millions of their lives suffer from smoking-related diseases. But WHO is drawing attention to the fact that non-smokers, especially children, are seriously affected by smoking from others.
If you think that if you do not smoke yourself, keep your health, then you are deeply mistaken. According to WHO, more than 4,000 chemicals are present in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are considered harmful and more than 50 are carcinogenic. Being close to smokers, especially indoors, we inhale the smoke of their cigarettes and put ourselves in grave danger. Among adults, secondary tobacco smoke causes cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, including coronary heart disease and lung cancer.
It is estimated that half of all children are exposed to the effect of so-called passive smoking indoors. This means that they are at risk of asthma, pneumonia and bronchitis, as well as frequent infections of the lower respiratory tract. 165 thousand children under 5 years old, regularly breathing in someone else's smoke, die. Those who live to adulthood are more likely to develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. By the way, among adolescents living in a smoking family, the likelihood that they smoke themselves is 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of those whose parents do not smoke.
Babies who are still in the womb are not protected from exposure to toxins - not only if she smokes herself. Even the impact of someone else's tobacco smoke on the expectant mother - and as a result of the fetus - can lead to a slower growth of the baby and the development of its lungs. And in infants, the risk of sudden death syndrome increases.
There is no safe level of exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke, according to WHO. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that all people have the opportunity to breathe fresh air. Laws prohibiting smoking in public places protect the health of non-smokers and do not harm the business. It is also one of the factors contributing to quitting smoking.
